Aspirations Day 2010

Year 11 students took part in a range of workshops, careers fair and talks about post 16 progression routes during our Aspirations Day 2010.

The aims of the day were:
  • to raise aspirations for future education, training and careers;
  • raise awareness of opportunities in a variety of careers and job sectors;
  • provide information about apprenticeships and how to apply;
  • offer information and support about personal finances and economic wellbeing;
  • to expose students to employers, colleges, training providers, further education and higher education providers;
  • to provide a safe, valuable, worthwhile, individual, supported and fun environment in which students could enhance, develop and build on their skills and knowledge to help prepare them for post 16, post 18 and future careers
All students could choose two workshops to attend which consisted of S and B Motors, ‘Money Sense’ by Nat West Bank, Care Profession and Social Work, NHS, Apprenticeships, Construction Skills and Army.

Many of the workshops involved hands on activities. Students were to found taking blood pressure; experiencing what it might feel like to be old and have limited mobility and poor eyesight with special strap on equipment and glasses and experiencing what a pregnancy might feel like with a strap on ‘bump’ in the NHS workshop. In the construction workshop students were planning designs for towers and executing them using only spaghetti and marshmallows! The amount of these materials all had to be projected for and ‘bought’, providing a simulated activity of how to work to a budget. This activity also demonstrated, at first hand, the vital aspect of how to work successfully in a team.

The careers fair provided the opportunity for students to ask questions and find out more from a range of professionals , employers and providers including Airbus, Bath Spa University, Bema Engineering, Filton College, KTS Training Provider, MOD, Construction Skills, Norton Radstock College, Police, University of the West of England, RAF, Reflections Hair Academy, Bristol University, Learning Skills Council, City of Bristol College and the Army.

Each pupil also attended an information session to find out more about Hanham High School Sixth Form and the City of Bristol College.
Many of the contributors to the Aspirations day commented how impressed they were with the positive attitude, politeness and maturity of our Year 11 students.

Thank you to all who helped to make this day a valuable and worthwhile experience, from teachers and staff in school, to all the visitors who contributed their time and expertise.

Mrs K.J. Moore and Mrs.L.Durant
