Ambitions Event 2010

Ambitions Event Year 9 and Year 12
4th November 2010

Year 9 and Year 12 students were involved in the Kingswood Partnership ‘Ambitions Event’ along with all Year 9 and Year 12 students from our partnership schools, held at the Exhibition and Conference centre at the University of the West of England.

The aims of the event were:
  • To raise student awareness of different employment sectors
  • To highlight the range of jobs within organisations
  • To enhance student understanding of opportunities available at different entry levels into employment,16 plus, 18 plus, degree level
  • To provide information about skills, personal qualities, abilities and interests relevant to a variety of organisations and employment areas.
  • To bring to the attention of students the personal and community benefits to be gained from volunteering and other skills development opportunities
  • To emphasis the significance of personal skills such as reliability, teamwork, problem solving and communication.
Pupils had the opportunity to take part in three different workshops facilitated by over 60 employers, businesses and higher education providers representing 12 employment sectors. This allowed pupils to be in small groups and to find out more about the world of work or learning opportunities from people actually directed involved with those career areas or educational routes. It allowed pupils the chance to speak to the representatives and ask questions.

It provided the space for time out of school to consider possible pathways for the future and to feel a part of the Kingswood Partnership. On returning to school the pupils were given a chance to reflect on what they had found out and to record valuable feedback.

This is the first time Hanham High School and the Kingswood Partnership has been involved in such a large scale ‘Information, Advice and Guidance’ event. It ensures that all our young people are receiving equal opportunities for high quality and impartial and information, advice and guidance.

This event supports our already well established and invaluable Information, Advice and Guidance programme at Hanham High School. Work with Year 9 pupils on Careers and preparation for making successful option choices for Key Stage 4 continues in Personal Challenge, Tutor time and assemblies during Term 2.

Thank you to all involved in making this a successful and extremely worthwhile event and well done to all Year 9 and Year 12 students on their positive attitude and for representing Hanham High School in such a commendable manner.
