Humanities

Key Stage 3

The Humanities Curriculum Area is responsible for teaching History, Geography, and Religious Studies. Pupils have 7 one-hour lessons per fortnight.

In Terms 1/2 the following topics are taught: Skills in History - this builds on pupils’ work at Key Stage 2, also the Roman Empire which focuses on how the Romans built an Empire in Europe and its legacy. In Geography the focus is on building on pupils’ geographical skills, developing their ability to create and read maps. Religious Studies begins with a unit called Special Me. This involves the pupils having an in-depth look at themselves and how they feel about things.

In Terms 3/4 and 5/6 pupils in History study Medieval Realms, which explores what life was like in the Middle Ages. We make a fieldwork visit to the centre of Bristol searching for evidence about what Bristol was like in the Middle Ages and we finish the year looking at how citizens gained political freedom and rights. In Geography, in Terms 3/4 pupils explore Weather and Climate. In terms 5/6, they conduct a study called The World – a study of major global issues. Philosophy, Religion and Ethics study the Pilgrim Rituals of several world religions followed by a unit on Signs and Symbols. A variety of teaching and learning styles is used in the classroom ranging from whole class teaching, small group work and individual study. Homework is set once per fortnight for each Humanities subject.

Key Stage 4

In Year 10 the pupils will be able to study Geography, History, or Religious Studies all of which lead to a GCSE qualification. Some pupils study two Humanities subjects at GCSE.
